Description

Serenity

This image was taken in Arizona on the shores of the Topock Marsh. This lake stores excess water from the Colorado River and doubles as a natural habitat for many wild animals and birds. The clouds and sunset are often quite amazing from this exact spot. I've been coming to this place since I was a young child, and only recently have I been able to appreciate and capture it's beauty. Enjoy! :)

truly a great sky, and the colors are great
something i dont really understand is that the sky looks like its moving fast , like you used a several seconds exposure time
but i see its 1/5... any idea why the clouds look like that?
anyway... great work, would look great on my wall ;)
good job :)

I had the same question as blackshad. It looks like a radial blur filter, which isn't really helping the image. Horizon could also use straightening.

Colors, location and overall composition are nice.

To Cigaro: Even though I find that last comment offensive, I can see where you're coming from. I PM'd you the reason why I include that in my presentation. Votes, to me are a numerical opinion of how people feel about my work. I like to look at my vote stats to base an average and use that as part of my foundation to build a stronger piece next time. That's all. I meant nothing by it. Have a nice day! :)

Thank you everyone for your comments!

OK - just when i thought i was getting a teensy bit bored with beautiful sunsets - albeit beautifully executed sunsets - along comes this one and rewrites the rule book. Just my usual reservation about titles in the borders that can tend to make art look like a mass produced athena poster - but hey, i can roll that bit off the bottom of my screen! ;)
Can't get enough of those clouds!

I agree with everyone about how lovely this image is--and it really is, but I too had the same thoughts/questions as blackshad and Byonder (post #1 & 2). Why does the sky look like a long exposure while the foreground does not? It's not a crit, just a question. Anyway, nice results and looking forward to more of your artwork.

 04/12/06 @956

Tom, to me the exposure information is out regarding the sky the water and the grass ! but.. BUT>>>
The image is great, Really nice shot.............. 10+

The picture is incredible. Reminds me of early Robert Mekis's work. However in my opinion, I am not a fan of the cloud blur effect that is captured in this photo. The lake and tall grass seems to be be blown by a slight wind, but the sky's blur effect does not reflect that wind speed which brings to me a bit sense of doubt. But that is just my taste. You might try that effect again though, for it is is interesting no doubt in a different composition. All in all, a wonderul photograph. Congrats +5/7

 04/13/06 @993

Tommy, you did it again :) I'm not man for photography, but you are the exception! I always enjoy your pices, hope to see more soon ^^

What happened to the cloud?

Avatar ThruMyEyez

 04/13/06 @005

Interesting photo! My first thought was that it was a long exposure because of the appearance of the clouds. Obviously that is not the case as it's shot into the sun, the water is fairly sharp and the grasses show no sign of movement. So....I'll conclude the sky looked like this. Well done!

Avatar Byonder

 04/13/06 @031

Votes only equal what has mass-appeal (which generally tend to be very similar types of shots) not necessarily what is good. Which is why the top-ten looks the way it does, and has looked exactly the same for the past couple years. Top-ten photos are almost immediately recognizable - if it looks like you could add a motivational quote to it then it's a top-ten shoe-in :p

Avatar Alleggra

 04/13/06 @055

Wow!! This is really great :)

Byonder...you nailed it!

Avatar ThruMyEyez

 04/13/06 @063

mmmm...mass appeal, why is that a bad thing????

Avatar Byonder

 04/13/06 @068

Same reason Brittany Spears and 50 Cent are a bad thing :p

Avatar ThruMyEyez

 04/13/06 @081

Beatles, U2, IPod, Windows, etc.. Sometimes mass appeal means quality and things that work.
We will continue to agree to disagree Brandon. :)

Avatar Tommyguns

 04/13/06 @091

You have a point Gary, however Brandon is correct! Brittney Spears and 50 Cent are garbage. ;)

Avatar Byonder

 04/13/06 @099

Occasionally mass-appeal and quality are found in the same thing, I agree. You’re kind of mixing up aesthetics and concept with functionality though with things like the iPod and Windows.

More often than not something that successfully appeals to a large amount of people needs to be “dumbed-down” enough so that everyone can understand it. That’s why Windows is more popular than Linux and 50 Cent’s lyrics could be written by a demented chimpanzee.

You can PM me if you want to debate this (although as you said I think we both know where we stand on this). I don’t want to continue clogging up Tom’s comment-section with rhetoric :p

Avatar ThruMyEyez

 04/13/06 @100

You noticed I didn't add Brittney or 50 Cent to the quality list!! :)

Avatar Byonder

 04/13/06 @110

So how do you differentiate between 50 Cent appeal and The Beatles appeal?

And for every Beatles there are at least a hundred 50 Cents (which incidentally would equal $50.00).

Superb work, Tom. I find the cloud formation fascinating, the effect is like that of a fast moving sky... perhaps a combination of exposure and high altitude wind provided you with this winner.

brandon concerning your 100/1calculation i wonder what you would have said about beatles if you were born in the 1960s... ;))

nice shot, compositional-wise very funky, though dont like the mono-color plus the blur...

edit: maybe you could try this technique with (at least) 2 elements, so there is a reference for the viewer.. right now the sky gets a little out of line... oversharpening of a second element could work aswell

wow, from the thumbnail i thought this doesnt look like it should be the highest rating piece, but once opened its amazing, the sky really makes the pic and although the lack of stong colour themes, i think that makes it.

im wondering does the sky have an effect on it or is that the "Pattern Metering"? (not very good on the photography jargen, lol)
